The Bar Scene

The bar scene. Most of us have there at some point during our single lives. I, myself, spent pretty much every weekend of my college years at one bar or another. And I had lots of fun doing it–getting all dressed up, hanging with friends, getting some drinks, dancing the night away, and (sometimes) snagging a hot guy.

And that’s really all there was to it. But the authors of You Didn’t Hear It From Us like to think that the bar scene is a lot more complicated than that. From the title of their book, you would think that they’re about to divulge big secrets–secrets about what men are really thinking and how women can rule the scene. What they do, instead, is just overly complicate the situation and turn common sense into “advice.” I mean, the majority of us know that it’s unlikely that you’re going to find true love in a bar. The majority of us know that people in a bar are usually just looking for a one-night “hook up.” The majority of us know that confidence is sexy. So, I doubt that the majority of us need a book telling us all this.

One thing in the book did stand out to me, however. The authors state that “For better or worse, in our society these days there are no right answers in terms of sexual protocol and timing.” Basically, that it’s ok to go home with a person you hardly know. That it doesn’t matter whether you sleep with someone on the first date or the fifth.

Is that true? I mean, are there really no “rules” anymore? When did it become ok to jump into bed with every man you date? With every man you meet at a bar? Now, I’m far from being conservative when it comes to sexual matters, but I can’t help but wonder if our sexual free-for-all is actually hurting our relationships???

I guess I’ll just have to see what others say about it….
