So, I’m at work, flipping through the magazine Psychology Today (which is a great psychology magazine for the non-psychologists among us). I stop on an article called “Tongue-Tied” which briefly discusses the results of a study done at RadBoud University in the Netherlands.
The topic of their study? How mixed-sex interactions (a guy and girl talking, for example) affect guys’ thinking. They had strangers talk to each other and then gave them cognitive tests.
The not-so-shocking result? “Talking to women handicapped men’s performances, particularly if the guy had the hots for her.” And it didn’t matter if the guy was already in a relationship. Basically, the more a man tried to impress a woman, the dumber he got.
So perhaps that explains why men often act like idiots! (Just kidding guys… wink, wink.)
Women in the study also suffered a little when they tried to impress the men… BUT, they didn’t get nearly as dumb as the guys. Big shocker, right?
So, the moral of the story? Don’t try so hard to impress the opposite sex–you’ll only end up looking like an idiot.
